Herbert Spencer
Herbert Spencer was a professional designer and Senior Research Fellow at the Royal College of Art in London, where he headed a study group engaged in research into the legibility of print. Spencer edited and authored books on typography and graphic design. He also founded the magazine  Typographica, which he edited until 1967. He was editor of the Penrose Annual from 1964 to 1973, and president of the AGI from 1971 to 1974. Explore related designers including Anthony Froshaug and Ken Garland. Typographica is Herbert Spencer’s highly-collectable British journal and one of the most influential mid-century graphic design publications. With both an old and new series published.

Ken Garland

Ken was born in 1929, in Southampton and grew up in a small market town in North Devon. He was a principled man, with strong values and views against the hyper-consumerism we live with today. Ken studied at the London Central School of Arts and Crafts in the 1950s and was taught by Herbert Spencer, Anthony Froshaug and Jesse Collins. Whilst at the School he studied alongside designers Ken Briggs, Alan Fletcher and Colin Forbes.
