Avant Garde was Herb Lubalin’s collectable late-1960s magazine known for its typography and design.
Avant Garde was an American arts and politics magazine published in New York from 1968 to 1971. It was art directed by Herb Lubalin and edited by Ralph Ginzburg. The magazine is one of the most significant typographic objects of 1960s America. Lubalin designed its masthead, an upper-case geometric sans-serif with a system of ligatures and alternate characters.
