Graphics Handbook, Studio Vista / Reinhold. 1966

Information

(Foreword) “Graphic design is dependent for its effectiveness on many skills and technologies such as printing, photography and paper-making. Equally, the result of the graphic designer’s skill affects a large, and increasing, number of recipients. In the production of periodicals, product information, directional signs, promotion devices, company house style and film credit titles, he may be in the key co-ordinating position.

This manual attempts to define the media which are at the disposal of the graphic designer, to clarify the nature and scope of visual information as it relates to his work, and to supply in tabular form hard facts which are the essential background to any serious effort in this field.

This tabulated information, in verbal and diagrammatic form, is the core of the book and should make it an indispensable tool for all those concerned with the proper use of graphic design. The author, who was formerly art editor of Design magazine, is a well-known graphic design consultant and photographer. He has taught typography and graphic design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and is a governor of Hornsey College of Art, London.”

Beyond being mere artefacts of design, these examples encapsulate the dynamic changes Japan was undergoing during this period. The design output of this era not only served commercial purposes but also became a powerful medium for expressing these societal shifts.

Working alongside André Gürtler and Bruno Pfäffli, Adrian Frutiger designed many logo designs. Here is a selection of the designs which were featured in Der Druckspiegel, December 1961. I have also translated and rewritten the descriptions to provide more depth.

As part of their marketing strategy, Kast + Ehinger, commissioned a selection of German designers to produce advertisements aimed at the design industry. I have scanned in quite a lot of their advertising matter, all of which were back-page advertisements from three German design magazines. Der Druckspiegel, Gebrauchsgraphik and Graphik – Werbung + Formgebung.
