Total Design was established in 1963 and was the first large design agency in the Netherlands, The company was founded by Wim Crouwel, Friso Kramer, Benno Wissing, Paul and Dick Schwarz. Before long, Ben Bos, an experienced copywriter and designer, joined the team. Their clients included Randstad, Stedelijk Museum, Schiphol airport, De Bijenkorf, PAM, Stichting Kunst en Hande and the Peter Stuyvesant Collection of paintings.

Ryuichi Yamashiro (山城隆)  was a Japanese graphic designer and artist, born in Osaka in 1920. He belonged to the same generation of pioneering Japanese designers as Kohei Sugiura, Kiyoshi Awazu, Yoshio Hayakawa, Yūsaku Kamekura, Kazumasa Nagai, and Ikko Tanaka.
