Type Directors Club Annual Lecture Series / Type in Action, Eight Visual Forums, 1953

Information

The lecture series was held on Tuesdays, March 3 through April 28, 1953 at the Engineering Societies Building, 29 West 39 Street, New York

“The use of type can, best be understood through a knowledge of how the type came into being, the design elements of the face, and how it has been and is being used. In the coming series of visual forums, the Type Directors Club will explain and show how type is used by presenting a detailed story on each of five main type families and a review of type decoration and miscellaneous material.
First session in the series will be handled by a creative team of art directors, designers, and type directors. They will employ the case history method to demonstrate how type is integrated into a design.
Concluding session in the series will be a clinical slide review of current printing shows with emphasis on how the different styles of type have been used during the past year.
The middle six forums will present visual answers to the following questions, each evening concentrating on a major type style: derivation of the face, related faces, how first used, how used today, what is in the font, what is in the family, how do same faces on different machines compare, how it prints in each process, its effect on paper, comparative size, comparative color, best method of rendering for layout, how does it combine with other faces, how does it copyfit, legibility and readability rating, special characters available.”

A country is never dead so long as it has an art. Austria is a proof of this maxim. Its liveliness since the war is liveliness which has displayed itself in the arts to a remarkable extent : it deserves the world's admiration and respect.

Giovanni began his work with Olivetti in March 1938, and his work was showcased in various exhibitions and had a clear distinctive style that amplified the Olivetti brand image. His design defined the company’s visual image, and the iconic geometric designs are still as powerful and engaging today as they were in the 1950s.
