Yoshio Hayakawa was born in Osaka in 1917 and is regarded as one of Japan's most influential post-war poster designers. His work is often described as a "harmonisation of traditional Japanese art with Western art," reflecting the design fusion that became a hallmark of Japan's postwar creative output.
A total of 24 posters were created for the campaign during 1964, using the arrow symbol as a key features, representing power, motion and speed. The handmade lithographs use up to 19 colours, which were individually printed at large scale. The posters also utilise the brand colours red and yellow from Shells corporate identity.
Victorian Graphic Design left a mark on both British and American design history. In Britain, the ornate embellishments served as a symbol of prosperity and cultural values. Meanwhile, America embraced the combination of various design elements to navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing society driven by industrialisation and consumerism.
